"Das ist, warum ich hasse dich!" he spat, giggling. "It's only my opinion, jeez. Calm down." he laughed. "But I'm keeping my list of suspects."

One podium seemed particularly quiet compared to the rest.
The notification had come suddenly, with a familiar panic, followed by the frantic whispering chorus of 'god no's and spending longer than they'd care to admit staring at the name displayed on the screen. Mikah was not someone they knew - or could every picture themselves knowing, but it wasn't like that mattered anymore. The lack of connection didn't change the fact that a mere couple of hours ago someone had died, a fellow captive, an innocent person, and that there was a certainty that someone... Someone on the ship had a hand in it. It wasn't a reality that they wanted to welcome quickly. So they spent the brief time before the inevitable trial restless, denying everything, rearranging things and tidying up, useless things. They found themselves glancing at the ID out of morbid curiosity, entertaining maudlin misery. It was hard to make out, but the dead boy had worn glasses, with scraps of something blue, impossible to tell much else... They couldn't remember. Unlike the others, there was no way he looked like he'd just slumped down for a nap. Blistered flesh, hand hanging slack. There is a humiliation there, like this wasn't something they should be seeing. A private affair. Every ounce of dread they'd felt seemed to be well founded. But they never went to see his remains in person.
To put it simply, Paris didn't feel brave enough to see another corpse in the flesh.
Besides, something scared them much more than the poor girl's demise, more than the murders and the grisly scenes, more than the reality that any one of them could be next and every time a stranger's remains were shown it was just killing time before it was Tomoko lying there in a mess, or poor Tori, or Missy, or them or- ( focus on the floor focus on your breathing do not think do not consider )
Things started to move backwards the moment they lost their train of thought early in the trial, the overwhelming surreal nature had smothered them into silence. They wanted to disappear, how hard would it be to just melt into a shadow at this point? They didn't know that kid well, anything they'd picked up on was just organised into small snippets. He was loud, voice with a level of depth that reminded them of echoing caves. He spent a lot of time with company, with a courage to seek out others that they so greatly missed in themselves. He had had coppery ginger hair, they were right, and the freckles to match. But he was fifteen years old, and it left them sick. Completely sickening, they had been left to their own devices about who the canister belonged to for too long. It'd left them in a pit of negativity, the anger and sorrow fuelling a headache that beat a funeral march just above their eyes, very near knocking them to their knees. They were weak, too weak to find a killer, too weak to look anyone in the eye, and far too weak to accept the grim reality of the situation. They felt the rotting fear of possibilities bite into their nerves, this uncertain outcome had only left them feeling more sick than their insides allowed. It was sick, this kind of innocence that left you wary and hurt on the inside because it was gone. Yeah, innocence. What a thing to find in a crime scene, amid the ashes and desecrated remains of someone who truly had deserved innocence. '...' And in one hideous welcomed moment, they wished the fire hadn't stopped here. They wished it'd continued, flames licking at bedspreads and at tables, sparks spinning up with smoke, muffled cracklings, fire engulfing the hell they were in now. The white hull ducking beneath the waves one final time. Because why did they deserve to be standing here when so many weren't? Why hadn't they saved the ginger kid, why was this sudden onset of unfamiliarity leaving them so hopelessly breathless and disheveled? What did they miss so dearly that they couldn't prevent such a gruesome incident from happening, how did they let this happen so easily? What did they miss? What were they missing now....? They missed talking to people, worried people, cheerful people, sad people, about something they genuinely were comfortable with discussing. Fur under fingers, kibble crumbs, soft feathers. They missed curling up in front of the television, scanning channels with textbooks on their knees, watching time move on around them. They missed the routine of sitting down for breakfast, hair a mess, limbs still sluggish and drowsy, and the comfortable silence of company. The few words exchanged, mentioning brief memories of dreams and today's plans over bites of toast. They missed Charlie, the lazy drives around the city, polystyrene cups hot in their bare hands. It burned their chest, the sore void of homesickness leaving them as empty and cold as the most barren of arctic wastelands. Devoid of life, devoid of noise. Peaceful, but at what expense? '.... Ah-' Barely audible and incredibly hoarse, they pause to quietly clear their throat. They still seem to be avoiding the gazes of others, fingernails digging into the podium. '... W-w-we shouldn't be, I mean, lllet's not look at the c-canister. Who-' the veterinary student's voice was a touch louder now, but continued to waver and stutter through their remarks, 'who would've been d-d-down here at three? I- I mean, this-' they mange to pry one hand off the podium to gesture towards their side, as if the scene was playing out behind them, 'it had to be pre-planned, rrrright? All the f-fire, this wasn't just a reflex, r-right? not spur of the moment? T-this must've taken time to ah, p-prepare. S-Someone lured the kid down here, or just w-waited?'

"Not bad, Shiraki-chan." Kaneki clapped his hands. "Someone lured the kid down there. He could've been wire-trapped, and I dunno what happens next."

"Micah was probably lured down here, yes." Tomoko said, after listening to the stammering voice that was Paris. "I would probably say the wire trap, which I believe was used as a tripwire was already set up as Micah was lead down here. So all the murderer had to do was simply step over it. Either that, or the murderer waited down in the storage room, and raised the wire trap just when Micah was about to walk into it, so that there were no chances of him stepping over it by accident." The bodyguard paused, frowning again. Did Paris say to not to focus on the cannister? But wasn't that the clue to the culprit's identity? "Although, I do think we should not forget about the cannister, let's concentrate on the method of the... Capture, for now."

"Sooooo, what's the rope for?" Kaneki looked up. "I know you said not to think about canisters. But the murderer may have trapped the ginger with the wire, tied a rope around the canister and set it alight, uh... sort of like a candle-wick sort of. The reason the wire hasn't melted yet is because Micah had escaped it, but then caught on fire and got too panicked and it was too late? That Micah had only escaped the wire trap a the last minute?" he shrugged. "I suck at this. But why did Micah went there in the first place? "Luring" someone is not quite the correct word, and that only works for animals. I could only think of someone closest to Micah wanting to have a private word with him and set up to meet at the storage room at three, and then the shit happens from there."
this is like,, the longest trial i

Tori was biting her lip. Oh god, uhm... Kaneki was going mad, everyone was mad. Okay, okay... Uh. Scrunching her eyebrows, she inhaled and exhaled, before putting a small smile on her face. Calmly. Calm. Hope. Okay, okay... The rope, wires... She had to remember all the facts. "Why was Micah... On top of the crate?"

"Oh yeah... why is he on the crate in the first place?" Kaneki laughed. "Maybe he got burned, the door was locked by the murderer and he was trying to get out of the window and climbed on top of the crate while burning. If there's any windows in the first place."

"Alright! So here's my deal." he cleared his throat. "Someone close to Micah requested him to have a private word with him and set up to meet at the storage room at three. When Micah turned up, the murderer trapped the Micah with the wire, tied a rope around the canister and set it alight like a wick. Micah escaped the trap wire at the last minute so that explains why the wire hasn't melted, but then the fire reached the cannister and he caught on fire and got too panicked and it was too late. The door was locked shut by the murderer and he climbed on top of the crate while burning, trying to get out of the window - if there's any window." he shrugged, laughing. "I don't know."

"I believe he was probably tied up." Tomoko said, tilting his head slightly as he leant on the podium. "The cut rope would suggest that."

"Hmm... Isn't like, the storage room the lowest floor, though? I don't think it has any windows..." she frowned, scratching her chin.

"Kaneki, currently you are not making any sense." Tomoko said, irritation lacing his voice. "If anything, the murderer would have been choked by the smoke, had they climbed through a vent." He sighed, shaking his head, "The wire trap was quite a distance away from the crime scene, which is why the wire did not melt. It was used as a trip wire, to trip Micah up." The bodyguard rubbed his forehead in frustration slightly. Today he was being tested to try and burst through the thickest of skulls, and it was annoying the hell out of him. "The rope was used to tie him up, which is why there was no evidence of it being used later, as when Micah was set on fire, so was the rope."
